The Center for Professional Development (CPD) is dedicated to providing hands-on, skills-based education and training in the design and media fields by industry-experienced faculty. Programs are geared toward both novices and those already working in the field that are seeking retraining, enhanced creativity and increased marketability. Coursework focuses on design and communication processes and project-based instruction. The programs reflect the college's belief in lifelong learning and individual betterment.

Advanced Residential Interior Decorating
Residential Interior Decorating is more than paint, pillows and perspective. It takes a broad knowledge of many elements. Today's designers need to know about lighting, electrical plans, Green design and the rules that govern design for those with disabilities. The Certificate in Advanced Residential Interior Design will provide the skills your need for your professional development.
The Certificate in Advanced Residential Interior Decorating offers a series of five (5) courses, each of which meet for a total of seven (7) weeks. The program includes: lighting, with a focus on electrical plans; designing for people with disabilities; business practices; perspective drawing techniques; and Green design with an introduction to LEED.
Advanced Website Development
The Certificate of Completion in Advanced Web Development is an advanced-level program intended for those who have successfully completed the Website Development Certificate offered by The New England Institute of Art. The program teaches participants how to further explore and build upon the skills learned in the first program.
The Advanced Web Development course will explore the Hypertext Markup Language, CSS, basic programming skills, and intermediate to more advanced Flash concepts. In addition, there is an introduction to PHP which is a widely-used general-purpose open source scripting language that is especially suited for Web development which can be embedded into HTML. Using a Web Development Process Model students will continue to explore the structural and technical aspects of Web site development and programming.
Computer-Aided Design & Documentation
The certificate in Computer-Aided Design and Documentation (CAD) introduces participants who wish to integrate drafting (2-D) and design (3-D) systems in their practice through the production of two-dimensional documents - plans, sections, elevations, and details - and the generation of 3-D models and representations - axonometric and perspective illustrations, and animations.
With an emphasis on a hands-on exploration, development and synthesis of design ideas, the participants in this CAD certificate program will learn to create geometric entities in a modeling environment; organize and order information; edit elements, parts and components; dimension and annotate drawings; organize and layout designs in order to, finally, assemble projects in various formats, producing hard-copy documents for presentation. The certificate culminates in the creation of an individual and comprehensive project, of the participant's choice, that draws from the skills developed and fine-tuned throughout the sequence.
DIGIDESIGN Pro Tools Certification
Take your Pro Tools training to the next level at The New England Institute of Art and become a Certified Pro Tools Operator. The Digidesign® Training and Education program offers a comprehensive hands-on curriculum designed to give you the skills you need to work with Pro Tools in a professional environment. Becoming a Certified Pro Tools Operator can be an important step toward landing your next gig and building a professional resume.
Courses are taught by faculty from The New England Institute of Art who are certified Digidesign trainers. Our faculty are experienced professionals and can update participants on current industry demands and practices. Class size is small to allow for individual instruction. All classes are held in a hands-on lab environment which allows each student time to work on individual workstations and in our studios. Students will be given ample time for practice in class and will have the opportunity to schedule additional time in our labs.
Digital Audio Production
The Certificate in Digital Audio Production will introduce participants to the fundamentals of digital audio and is designed for musicians and audio enthusiasts who wish to enhance and elevate their technical and creative skills. Participants will be taught the concepts of sound theory and digital audio theory to enable personal and professional growth using digital audio workstations. Course content is focused around students becoming proficient in the use of Digidesign's Pro Tools (TM) recording and editing system. Faculty members are experienced professionals who can update participants on current industry demands and practices. Pro Tools classes are held in a hands-on lab environment which allows each student time to work on individual workstations. All work culminates in the creation of an individual project that draws from the skills attained throughout the Certificate course.
Digital Graphic Design
The Certificate of Completion in Digital Graphic Design will introduce you to the fundamentals of digital graphic design and is geared toward those who wish to enhance and elevate their skills and creativity. You will be taught conceptual design of effective communication materials through the use of visual elements such as color, typography and visual relationships. From concept to product delivery, course content is designed with the most relevant industry standards in mind. Faculty members are working in the fields in which they teach, and can therefore update participants on current industry demands and practices in a hands-on setting, thereby giving individual attention to all participants. All work will culminate in the creation of an individual project that draws from the skills attained throughout the Certificate of Completion.
Digital Photography
The Certificate of Completion in Digital Photography is designed to provide the fundamentals of digital photography. You will study and employ the techniques of camera functions, elements of composition, digital imaging/manipulation using Adobe Photoshop, photo history, be introduced to basic digital output processes and finally develop a portfolio of images.
A Digital Camera, with manual aperture and shutter speed capability, is REQUIRED. Writable CD/DVDs, an external hard drive, and Adobe Photoshop CS2 are suggested.
Digital Video Productions
The certificate in Digital Video Production will focus on the fundamentals of video production from concept to completion using digital video production tools such as Final Cut Pro, Inspiration and Motion. Students will explore effective, time-saving video production techniques including hands-on training with the latest digital cameras to produce professional quality video for broadcast and corporate production. This program was created to serve the corporate video markets as well as supplement training to existing broadcast video professionals in television and production studios.
Course work will be comprised of media and critique, including peer review of assignments, student writing and research projects as well as individual and group production assignments/projects. In-class work and homework will be assigned.
Residential Interior Decorating
The certificate of completion is designed and structured into five modules to provide the fundamentals of interior decorating. Those enrolling in this certificate program will study furniture, materials, sources, color theory, develop skills in drafting and space planning, create presentation drawings, and learn key residential design business practices.
Website Development
The Certificate in Website Development is a mid-level program geared toward participants who already have basic design skills but wish to explore a more creative application of these skills and upgrade their professional abilities. This program will teach participants how to employ their skills in the creation of effective and distinctive Web site design and implementation. Instruction will focus on the technical aspects of Web design including media integration, Web authoring tools, and interface design. Courses will provide industry-specific instruction with an emphasis on the current practices. Faculty is comprised of industry professionals who are able to introduce participants to processes and technology most relevant in today's industry.
Program offered through the Center for Professional Development are non-credit bearing courses and do not transfer into any program offered at The New England Institute of Art.
